The Wise Old Tortoise

Barnaby the grumpy tortoise sighed under the giant oak. He wanted a quiet nap, but the noisy forest youngsters kept asking questions.

"Why is your shell so hard?" asked a little rabbit. Barnaby grumbled and pulled his head inside, wishing for a moment of peace.

The next morning, a fierce storm shook the forest. Strong winds blew away the animals' food and hid all the familiar paths.

Shivering and scared, the young animals gathered around Barnaby's shell. He groaned, but he knew he had to lead them to safety.

Barnaby led the group into the wet woods. He grumpily showed them how to read the green moss on the trees to find their way.

Next, he pointed his claw at the damp earth, teaching the hungry little ones which sweet roots and berries were safe to eat.

A rushing, swollen stream suddenly blocked their path. The water dashed against the rocks, far too deep and fast to cross.

Remembering Barnaby's lessons, the young animals gathered fallen branches to build a sturdy bridge across the rushing water.

The young animals marched safely across the branch bridge. Watching them succeed, Barnaby felt a warm, proud glow in his heart.

They finally reached a dry, cozy cave safe from the storm. The young animals scurried inside, shaking the cool raindrops from their fur.

Inside the cave, the young animals happily shared food and practiced their new lessons. Watching them, Barnaby smiled with quiet pride.

As the storm cleared, Barnaby knew his wisdom was safe. It would live on through these young friends, guiding the forest for generations.
