The First to Do Everything

Being the oldest meant Pip always had to go first, testing the cold lake or stepping into the dark attic.

While his little siblings stayed safe behind him, Pip often wished he didn't always have to be the brave one.

Then, a swirling white fog rolled over the path to the village festival, turning the familiar woods dark and mysterious.

The younger children whimpered and stopped, afraid of the shadows. Pip looked down at his small paper lantern, knowing they needed him.

With a deep breath, Pip took the first step into the misty woods, raising his warm lantern high to chase the darkness away.

As the lantern glow pushed back the creepy shadows, Pip searched the ground to find the safest places to step.

Suddenly, a loud whoosh of wind shook the tree branches, threatening to blow out the tiny lantern's flickering flame.

Pip shielded the tiny flame with his hands and body, standing tall to keep the light burning bright.

Seeing his brave stand, the younger children stepped into the light, ready to follow their big brother anywhere.

Together, they marched through the foggy forest, following the warm path of light Pip made for them.

Suddenly, the dark trees parted, and the bright, sparkling lights of the village festival welcomed them out of the fog.

Safe in the warm festival lights, Pip smiled. Going first was special when it meant lighting the way for the ones he loved.
