“I am going to be a big sibling,” the child whispered to the quiet room, closing their eyes to dream of the future.
They imagined teaching the baby how to stack wooden blocks high, and how to find the softest green moss in the yard.
During the day, the child practiced their lessons, showing their teddy bear how to share toys and hold hands.
As the weeks crawled by, Mama's tummy grew even rounder. The child marked each passing day on a colorful calendar.
Sometimes, the waiting felt very long. The child looked out at the falling leaves, wondering when their new friend would arrive.
They helped get the nursery ready, placing a soft knitted blanket into the tiny crib by the window.
One quiet night, a sudden, strong wiggle bumped against the child’s ear. It felt like a tiny, secret hello from the inside.
“Don’t worry,” the child whispered back to the warm bump. “I will teach you how to chase butterflies and stay safe in the rain.”
The long wait was almost over. The big sibling drifted off to sleep that night, dreaming of the sweet adventures to come.
Finally, the wait was over. Holding a bright block for the tiny baby to see, the proud big sibling whispered, 'This is where we start.'
